G. Tyge Payne is
the Georgie G. Snyder Professor
of Strategic Management and a Jerry S. Rawls Professor at Texas Tech University. Dr. Payne returned to TTU in 2006 after four years as an Assistant Professor
at the University of Texas at Arlington. He holds a PhD in Strategic
Management and an MBA, both from Texas Tech University. He also has a BS in
Pharmacy from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and has been a
registered pharmacist since 1994.
Dr. Payne’s research interests include organization-environment fit/misfit,
interorganizational relationships, social capital, firm-level
entrepreneurship, venture capitalism and family business. He has authored or co-authored
over 60 peer-reviewed publications,
which appear in such outlets as Business Ethics Quarterly, Entrepreneurship Theory and
Practice, Family Business Review, Health Care Management Review, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal
of Management, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of Small Business
Management, Organizational Research Methods,and Organization Science, among others.
Dr. Payne is currently the Editor of
Family Business Review,
which is an academic journal dedicated to studying and better understanding
the dynamics of family-controlled enterprise. He has also co-edited several special issues on various topics,
including 1) Social Capital and
Entrepreneurship (2013) in Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice,
2) Process and Variance Methods in Family
Business Research (2017)
for Family Business Review, 3) Reviews on Family Business (2018) for
Family Business Review, and 4) The Who, Where, What, How and When of Market
Entry (2018) for the
Journal of Management Studies. He has been the recipient
of several reviewer awards for his service to the strategic management and
entrepreneurship academic communities; these include an Outstanding Reviewer
Award from Group and Organization Management (2017), Outstanding
Reviewer Award from Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice (2016), an Excellent Reviewer
Award from Family Business Review (2012), five Best Reviewer
Awards from the Academy of Management (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2008) and
three Best Reviewer Awards from the Southern Management Association (2001,
2002 & 2006). He served on the governing board of the
Southern Management Association (2009-2012) and is now a Fellow for SMA.
He is also a review board member for
Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice, Group & Organization Management, Journal
of Business Venturing, Journal of Small
Business Management, Journal of Management
and Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal.
In 2010, Dr.
Payne received the
Chancellor's Council Distinguished Research Award, which is the highest
research award given by theTexas Tech University System to faculty members.
In 2014, Dr. Payne received
inaugural President's Mid-Career Faculty Awards. This award's intent is to
"recognize and reward those faculty who are emerging leaders nationally and
internationally in their disciplines and who serve as role models and
mentors for our students."
In 2016, Dr. Payne received the Integrated Scholar
Award from the Rawls College of Business for combined efforts in research,
teaching and service.
